Behind The Design - Transitional Guest Bathroom

Most Fridays on Instagram I like to do design polls as a fun activity for any participants and a way for me to use some of my current favorite materials in a design.

Interior design for a transitional guest bathroom with antique vanity.

Transitional Guest Bathroom Concept Board posted August 7, 2023.

Inspiration

Who doesn’t love closed storage, right? At least, I am assuming that is why the poll for this week’s concept board heavily leaned towards this closed cabinet. Now, don’t get me wrong. The prompt was a transitional bathroom, and this cabinet fits the bill. The wood tone is timeless.

Color & Scale

The arched tin mirror adds a lot of character, as does this wallpaper! The muted yellow leans into the antique feel of the space.

Covering the floor with smaller tile also lends to the older feel. Modern elements like the rug, sconces and waste basket bring the design to today’s trends.

Styling

I love the black leather wrapped sconces, and brought that touch of black down to the trim on the wavy waste basket.

A black vase with droopy leaves creates a more casual moment next to the formal artwork with thick matting.

A gold and fluted glass soap dispenser brings the gold from the art frame over to the vanity.

A nickel towel ring matches the other permanent fixtures which is nice for resale. A black and white striped towel hanging adds that third touch of black.

Tip: You can make small touches of an accent color work when tied through to at least three elements, making up about 10% of the color scheme.

Now Step Back

I like this design, but couldn’t help myself from using the other sink option from this week's concept board, so I didn't a second one!

Second interior design for transitional guest bathroom

Inspiration

Floating sinks are having a big moment and I have been obsessing over this viola marble in general. The sink wasn’t enough for me, so I created a marble shower for this design too.

The same floor tile makes an appearance on the shower floor.

Color & Scale

This concept board turned out a little more monochromatic with variations of brown, ivory, and touches of brass. Even though the marble has so much movement and browns, I wanted some more warmth with the brass fixtures.

Large ivory pieces like the mirror, waste basket, toilet and floor tile keep the space light with the darker wallpaper.

The fine wallpaper pattern is a funky take on traditional styles. I love it paired with the marble and larger scale floor pattern.

Styling

A modern pattern on the rug in a cozy material adds a lot of warmth to this space.

A little ink landscape painting over the toilet and a faux plant on the sink add some life.

A scalloped rattan basket on the back of the toilet matches the scalloping on the waste basket and acts as a toilet paper holder. This way a roll of toilet paper doesn't distract from the beautiful wallpaper or marble sink.

Now Step Back

Even though I used some of the same pieces, these two bathrooms have a completely different look, but a similar warm antique feel.

Which bathroom would you rather have in your home and why? I know mine.
